Third significant period is from day 50 to 91 (seven to twelve weeks) It is critical to the puppy's mental and psychological development for the puppy to remain with their mother and littermates until week 8; the puppy learns dog behavior - identifies as being a dog, proper dog conduct relative to biting, leadership, body posture, language and socialization… a puppy adopted out before 8 weeks may develop behavioral problems, may be more nervous or aggressive, more prone to barking and biting, and may have a difficult time with socialization and training. * At approximately eight/nine weeks, puppies start experiencing fear and become startled in situations or around objects that did not alarm them prior to now; it is perfectly normal behavior and does not mean you will have a fearful dog. Traumatic, frightening or painful situations have to be avoided at this age for they tend to give lasting impressions; positive reinforcement and training will help the puppy through this stage. * By seven to nine weeks the puppy is refining their physical skills and coordination, including housetraining, and full use of their senses. *By nine to twelve weeks they are refining reactions, social skills and exploring the environment, spaces and objects. This is the best age to introduce the puppy in a positive way to as many people things or noises as possible, especially those which he will encounter late in life; persons of different stature of clothing/hats, children, cats, other dogs, vacuum cleaner, traffic and so forth, however the following needs to be strongly considered when socializing a puppy at this age; until nine weeks of age the puppy is most vulnerable to diseases such as parvo, distemper, and hepatitis and can be fatal to puppies; the time to worry most is the period after the mother's protection ends between six to eight weeks, and until after the second vaccine takes effect. Prevention is the best cure; ask your vet if they are familiar with any recent outbreaks of diseases/viruses or of anything that may be fatal to your puppy; remember puppies are very curious at this age and are sniffing everything, putting objects in their mouth and if certain precautions are not taken the puppy can be exposed to harmful even fatal diseases; maintain a clean environment for your puppy by ensuring people who come in contact with your puppy have clean hands, clothing during the time your puppy is vulnerable. By twelve weeks puppies usually have received two to three vaccine sets and can safely interact with other vaccinated puppies and dogs. |
